A very basic overview of what polygamy actually is.!

Polygamy can be referred to as a practice of marrying multiple spouses. When a man is married to more than one wife at a time, it is called Polygyny while if a woman is married to more than one husband at a time, it is called Polyandry..

If a marriage has multiple husbands and wives, it can be called a Group Marriage..

So basically, the term polygamy is used in case of multiple marriages..

Further, having multiple marriages but having only one legal spouse at a time is called Serial Monogamy..

Now that we are done with the overview of what is polygamy, lets take a look into the practice followed in the world when it comes to polygamy..

Practices relating to polygamy

Most cultures in the world that permit polygamy permit polygyny rather than polyandry. Polyandry is much less popular than polygamy and is illegal in almost every state in the world except for it is being practiced in some remote communities..

As of polygyny, it is mostly associated with the Muslim religion. Neither all Muslim cultures practice it not is it restricted to this religion, but still it is legally accepted in counties with Muslim majority or sizeable Muslim minority..

Status of polygamy in India

Polygamy is outlawed in India. It was not prohibited in Ancient India. It was quite common for Rulers and Kings.

Article 494-495 of IPC,1860 prohibited polygamy for Christians.

In Mizoram, a Christian religious sect called, ‘Pu Chana Pawl’ formed in June 1942 practices polygamy.

The founder Ziona, 66 year old man has 39 wives, 94 children and 33 granchildren.

Hindu Marriage Act which was drafted in 1955 prohibited a marriage of a Hindu whose spouse was still living.

Since 1956, polygamy became illegal in India for its citizens, except for Hindus in Goa and Muslims.

A polygamous Hindu Marriage is null and void..
